So all of us are wanting fulfilling life, this is going to be very applicable to anybody listening in today. But specifically, we're going to be talking about influence. And in the show, you've heard me say that leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less. So this is gonna be a great time for us to grow in our leadership. So Marina, welcome. Thank you so much. It's great to see you again.

Marina Barayeva  1:21
Like I'm so happy to see you. Again. It's been a long time, but I'm glad we stay connected. You are amazing person inspiring person.

Mike Acker  1:29
Thank you so much. It was great being on your podcast, something that I would love for people to tune into. And I'll put that in the show notes in the YouTube notes. And last I talked to you or when I talk to you originally, you were in Beijing. And so you're quite the international person talking to people all over right now. I believe you're in Russia. And so talk to us a little bit before we dive in just how is this? How is all this affecting what you do? Well, I'm

Marina Barayeva  1:54
originally from Russia. And this is where I am right now. But I moved to China in 2010. And he that was kind of my base for what I was doing the time I've been a portrait photographer for eight years. And I traveled everywhere, but always would come back to Beijing, because I like the place. It's where you can do almost anything. You can try all the things you can meet the international people, it's so wonderful. And because of the pandemic, it just fooling the world upside down. I came to visit my family and I couldn't come back. And it's like, Wow, what an interesting flashback to where it started.

Mike Acker  2:33
Yeah, so interesting. And I'm going to put in the show notes as well, your media kit, because I just think it's fascinating, all of the photography awards that you have, and some of the work that you've done. And I know that that's not what you're doing primarily. But it is a great point of interest, and so on. include that in there. So people can check out a little bit of your background, and invite you into their different shows and different things that they're doing as well. Well, this is fun. I love that we're flipping the script here, because a year ago, you had to be on the show. So now I get to ask you questions. And one of the huge areas that you excel in is influence. So I thought since leadership is influence, let's talk about that. And let's talk about how our listeners and how our watchers how they can go ahead and build their influence. So let's just start out with something just kind of an easier one. What you start out with what do people start out with if they want to become an influencer? What does that professional that business owner that ambitious go getter do if they want to become an influencer?

Unknown Speaker  3:34
you shed where well there that's an influencer is alluded to and they are very tied together. So if you look at the term influencer, an influencer is a person that can impact their opinion behavior choices, other people because of his or her authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with the audience. And relationship, like a model on Instagram can be an influencer. But she's not. Not that leader, which you usually come up with. She has some authority, but she doesn't have her expertise. And we when we talk about the professionals and the business people, we think about an influencer, who has their expertise, their knowledge, their experience, which they share with others. And it all starts with you at where you are right now. Like who you are, as a person, why people should listen to you, why they should come to you and how you can help them. So one of the simple things to start with is just think, who are those people who you serve, and what you help them to get either sold or what service you provide them.

Unknown Speaker  4:55
I love that I love that it starts with you. Can you tell me a little bit more about that because so many Much of what I talked about in terms of leadership, and speaking as it starts with you. And so when you're saying that as an influencer, what do you really mean? It starts with you.

Unknown Speaker  5:08
That's interesting that you pointed in this part. Because I work a lot with people with the inner side of the people. Like who you are from the inside, we usually seem like, oh, who am I? Like, I didn't have that. Yes, I know, some knowledge. But like, let's say I'm a doctor, I'm just a doctor. But you forget how many people you helped, how many? Like, okay, your certificates. They have your data, show your expertise, your the knowledge which you had, that the things which you've done, anything that you can show to people, and just make, start making a list. Everything of what you're proud of, or sometimes people are very shy. And then I know what I'm proud of, this is the small thing, which I've done, but people think that it was meaningful. So think about things which you've done, and you prod, or things which people tell you, or told you before, where they were great for what they think is your strength. So these are like if people say like, You're so good, Mike, you're so good at speaking, you're so good to really getting people and help them to discover that in a voice so they could speak on public basis, your uniqueness. And these can be a part of your kind of the position yourself as an expert as an influencer. One is the positioning. And another one is like, do you really go even that this is who you are, you need basically is just to remind yourself that you actually need placer. Even if you have only a few people around you, you can impact their life tremendously.

Unknown Speaker  7:05
Yeah, I love that. Also, that aspect of sharing with people sharing your expertise. So many people think that they don't have something of value. I had one person that wanted to be a motivational speaker, and he said, but I don't have the story of others. I never went to jail, I never had lost a limb. And I said, tell how you didn't go to jail. tell how you tell how you had a great life without getting scarred, you have a story, all of us have a story. Every single person has that they just need to find it. Are there different ways that you walk people through finding their story, finding their uniqueness, finding their expertise,

Unknown Speaker  7:45
you start with yourself, you start creating that place, and then you you bring them there? Well, their opinion, the people's opinion, your opinion, like your image. And then if you want to position yourself online, then if you want to be more wide, not only in your local community, then you have your website, you have your online presence. And you collect the several pieces there. You have your story, and you need to tell you need to know your story for itself, and for telling other people whether it's going to be on your website, or you meet someone but Mike, Tell me your story. How did you get to where you are right now? And as you said, it doesn't need to be difficult, go to jail. Yeah, you know, like, winning international awards. I've done this. But even if I didn't do this, it did not change that the fact that the value you can bring to people, your service, right? Your stories, it's very deeply connected to what you do and why you do.

Unknown Speaker  8:54
I love that you have something called your five steps of authority, or your your five step authority system. What does that include?

Unknown Speaker  9:03
So let's start with your foundation. Okay, start with who is the audience you want to reach and what service you provide them. And people were confused, like, Oh, I need to pick a niche and I don't know what to do. And maybe you work with a variety of people. It's more of that you can pick and you can stick if you if you notice people but if you have doubts, it's a focus even for yourself. Or like what is my ideal client with clients where they want to work because you will craft your message your content, your stories for those people, and you can work without us who will come to you and you would love to work with so you start with this very basic and if you create your presence online is going to be your website. A little bit about your service because Anyway, we'll leave in the digital here. Yeah and after Coronavirus. What people do they spend time One line, they will Google you. And it's so funny, you even will not expect this things. Like I had a guest on the podcast another day. And I was like, okay, so why did you say yes to be on my podcast because he's kind of influential person. And he showed me a few pages about me like, Okay, look at your website, what you've done and everything. But Wow, I didn't have so many documents about myself, you and so people look at you people, if they want to work with you, they would want to know more about you, your website, your story, your media kit, like if you would want to really grow your personal brand, and share your message to more wide to get publicity, it's quite easy actually. Again, when you know your messages, and you know, the audience who serves because you then you can reach them. So this is kind of your foundation, this is your first step. What do you do? One time, maybe you spend a few days a week, don't spend too much time on this. also put there your portfolio, testimonials, case studies, so people will learn a little bit more about you who you are, like, all this small things, which can help people to create a better vision of you, and how you could help them. Because even your website is not, it's not about you. It's about people who serve. So when they come, they see, and whatever you, whatever you do next with them, like, we're gonna call or provide the service, this is already an accept. So it starts with your foundation. And then you feed that, like, if you grow your personal brand, you will grow your influence, you pick how you're going to do this, I go in and do it through the content, and what kind of content Do you like to create the audience like you might do, or the writings or videos, anything which suits you know how you can share that message with people. So they will know more, and you can connect with them before they reach out to you and start working with you.

Unknown Speaker  12:19
And I love that just also for a business. And I'm thinking several though, some of the clients I work with are doctors or dentists or chiropractors have their own business. And one of the ways that they can even increase is looking at where am I found whether that's really focusing in on Yelp, and really, really, really honing in on Yelp, instead of trying to do everything but saying this is the channel I'm on. This is where I'm going to focus on versus for for them. Maybe YouTube isn't as relevant. But maybe writing a book or, or blogging consistently. But doing that and choosing to do it really focusing on that first before doing something else. I love that choosing, choosing the way you're going to do it instead of just trying to do everything.

Unknown Speaker  13:07
Exactly. When you do too many things. You spread yourself too much. And you don't hit anything. Like what is the what is the proverb if you chase two rabbits, you get no one or something like this? Yeah. So when you try to do many things, and people will tell you, oh, you need to be everywhere. And when you listen to big gurus, they will say you need to be everywhere. Yes. But when you start, it's too much for you, if you don't have a huge team who's going to do this for you, if you do it, only you already have one assistant, right and you don't want to grow it's too big with a huge team, then started with one channel to channel maximum. And really focus and understand how people find you there how people consume your message, how they react to that. So this is how you start building this relationship little by little with people. And then the third step is getting more media appearances. So you have your website, you got your media kit, where you put some like one to three topics which you can share in the area of your expertise, as they're wishing to other either magazines or podcasts. Again, focusing on your own people, and focusing on the places where you can find those people. So who are those either people or what are those websites, podcasts that serve the same audience. If you work with a dentist, then I need to be other than this. Right? There can be, let's say, maybe cosmetic salons or anything else where people take care of themselves, where you can find this audience and then you start bidding on different events. Because our media, medias, and it's quite easy. You also can have an assistant who just do the outreach to connect with people sharing your story start small, you start with the, you need to try this unit test how it works, do you understand the principle, and then you just expand. It's the repeatable, easy process.

Unknown Speaker  15:24
Right. And once you get on one it starts, starts rolling into others, one of the chiropractors, who's a client of mine, he's Dr. Henry, he does a fantastic job. And he's just reaching out, reaching out, reaching out. And now that he's been on a 30 hour podcast, more people are reaching out. What's great is when people Google him, and now he's all over the place he keeps, because people keep on talking about him. So if you if you're a CEO, or you're a professional who wants to, once you have a great internet presence, the more you're online in other people shows, for example, if you look at Mike and scroll down a couple pages, you'll find where I was on marinas podcast. And so now you have all this positive press. So just a little side note, if you need some online reputation management, get on do something good, and then get on a whole bunch of different podcasts. And now, now the search engine will optimize it for those results instead of others. little side note,

Unknown Speaker  16:24
yeah, that's a good one.

Unknown Speaker  16:26
What's your what's your fourth step, I love this, I love the foundation, and walking through the media and then getting yourself out there, what's your fourth step,

Unknown Speaker  16:35
the fourth step is working with influencers, you can actually switch between the third one or fourth one, the third one is going to be it can be either media and I would add their public speaking to it's like any ways how you can spread your message out. Okay. And the fourth one is working with influencers. And I love that people think like, Oh, it's so expensive, companies do this. Think about how you can bring value to them. All people, that's a huge secret. They people, they want something, they need something. Either you can create a podcast and bring them in. Or maybe you can collaborate on the band together. And they may be maybe they will promote something on your event. Maybe they will get some clients they're like you need to think about and come to them with your offer and how they will get value out of this. So you can come back, Mike, okay, you're so cool guy, I'm fan of you please promote me and my work, you bond it is probably you might not gonna share anything from me if I would be a random person. But once you, you know that you can help the person somehow, then you can come and actually offer that or you have some relationship like you connected on LinkedIn and kept in touch for a year, you can again come up with something. But one of the easiest thing, and it's one of my favorite because it's so easy. You create a project. Let's say you're a dentist, and you want to share tips. Like you need to create a project. So I'm imagining this right now. You want to interview 10 either celebrities or influencers like Instagram influencers, influencers who smile, you know, like how they take care about their beauty, their teeth, or what is the even morning routine? It doesn't need to be except they're really okay. How do you brush your teeth? Mike, let me interview you write something that will be useful for your audience. And, and which is kind of related to your business. do you what do you do, but it's not necessarily be directly like that. And what will be easy for other people for influencers to do. So you will be like I interview 10 people 10 get to the compliments. If you're a dentist and you reach out to him the 10 I think most have been women with the most beautiful smile on Instagram. What is your morning routine, I would like to share it with my clients. And if you do a good job well and you can come to and say to my office, I will have a chat and maybe we will do some white teeth whitening teeth for your whatever like small service something but you can give. So that's why you hit two points. You have the interview first. And if you can offer some of your service, you give them a taste of it. And if they like it, they may share it. It often happens and then when you collect This interview you Well, you let them know, of course you share on your website, if you haven't, or on your social media, you tag them. And you have imagined, if you have 10 influential people in one project in one article in one, even ebook, and ever, you will send a link to everyone more likely they will share. So you already reach a wide audience of new people, therefore their audiences. And with this project, what you can do, you can get to media. Because if you just come to me do with your ideas, I'm a dentist, I can teach you how to brush your teeth in the morning and keep them quiet and everything else. That's a good thing. Everyone can do this. You come with an article with the project of interviewing seven influential people in your town still ever it is in your area, who about their morning routine, and include a little bit of mumbi your comments or tips or something, so kind of it will be related to you industry, right? People are more likely to publish it. Or you can talk about it in the podcast, you know what I talked to them. And did you know that this everybody does this in the morning, and that one does that and they enjoy their life into the morning. And then they have a beautiful smile, whatever they have,

Unknown Speaker  21:29
right? I love this this is so this is so vital for anybody who, if you're thinking about wanting to rank on Google, this is a fantastic idea. Because now all sudden, you get you the influencers talking about what you are working on with your project. And now they're they're tweeting it, they're, they're putting it on Instagram or whatever channel they're doing it. And you might be thinking, Well, that doesn't really that doesn't go with what I'm doing, or that sounds like a lot of work. It's some work. And you you can hire even some people to some freelancers to put this together for you. But what's gonna happen is also now you're gonna have 10 people talking about your product, talking about your skill, which then is going to bring your business, whatever it is, whether you're retail or medical, professional, or large company, it's going to bring your ranking up higher and higher and higher. Or if you're a mid level manager, and you're doing this for your company, but your names associated with it. Now later on, when you're looking for that interview, and people Google you, just like they did with Marina, just like they do with me, then your name is gonna stand out. I like when you type in your name when you type in my name. And I don't know how common your name is. But my kit name is extremely common. And yet I'm the first three pages of Google and and continuing on further and further and further. And so how do you do that? Well, so that brings a lot of authority when people look you up. And just that consistency over time doing things just like that. I love that idea with working with influencers, even as you were saying it brina I'm thinking I should reach out to influencers and offer them a free communication coaching session. And then I'll do one here, and then I'll put it up on YouTube, they'll broadcast it. And I'll be helping them out in both ways. That's a that's an idea that was going through my mind.

Unknown Speaker  23:16
That's an interesting ideas. Brilliant, you have a podcast, a podcast is like a VIP cart, VIP access to people so you can invite someone to interview them. And then suggest them would you like to have either a short conversation after that the coaching session, or just let them know what what you do and ask what they are doing. So when you connect with a person, if you just sell your service or offer your service, like you're selling yourself, what when first you get to know a person, and a podcast is a good way for that. You get to know a person, and then you know where you can help them. So you can craft your message specifically for that. Like you, you've done great business. And I know I can help you with this, this and this. What do you like to have another conversation with me? But I need to put it official like, let's have a coaching session. Well, it can be but it just like different options. Yeah, so one of the ways.

Unknown Speaker  24:19
Yeah, I love it. I love it. Okay, so there's one last one, one last step. So what's that last step of the authority system.

Unknown Speaker  24:26
So the last one, you can call it a process like whatever you've done if 1234 the fourth steps, and the third and fourth will be you can switch them they need to be in that order. So in the end, when you've done some some projects, you update your media kit. Because when you start to start small start with maybe not that famous magazines, not that well known podcasts. You got some credentials. you update your media kit you you think maybe you update your store. Which you share the topics, whatever you want, and then you, you repeat the process. But then you reach out to hire media, you hire influencers, you, you kind of refer back to those project which you work on the podcast, once you've been on, let's say you've done one project with the celebrities for like about the dentist steps or morning tips, you've done this. And they will not top celebrities in the town. But then when you've done it, and maybe you get immediate periods of all this, well, you just share it on your website. And that was cool. And people like it, you can come to someone who is more popular in your area, and say like, you know what, I've done an amazing project. And I love what you do. So right now, I love projects, and I'm working on the next one, I know, there will be my or a few would be a part of my projects. I know that you are so famous and you're very picky in who you work with. But I would love you to check what I've done before seeing my work and how I'm careful about what I do I care about people. And would you like to participate in that project again? More likely, they will say yes.

Unknown Speaker  26:18
Why? And I saw that even with my business because I started really on the side. And I've done this for years and years and years, just coaching professionals coaching people and communication. But it wasn't business. So then once I had a couple clients, I was able to say, hey, look, I have a couple clients. And then I got a couple more. And then I had some people from Microsoft, and I was able to build up into some people from Amazon. And that continued to build up until now. It's just, yeah, I work with CEOs of multi million billion dollar companies and professionals all across the United States, but it didn't start there. And likewise, if you're looking for a certain group of clientele, you may not start there, depending on what your business plan is. I love this. Now, you have a shortcut to grow authority. So what are what are some shortcuts to grow authority?

Unknown Speaker  27:07
Well, this is the shortcut the product. It's one of the shortest ways and you can implement it everywhere you can implement it in your podcast. Or you can work with the influencers. And that goes to media. So let's say we did podcasts, like how you can combine influencers and the podcast, you either bring guests on your show, and you again you may start small, like for me, when I started my podcast, I didn't know that many well known people and attrition reached out to several and some of them were were known. So there was one Dorie Clark, she's quite known in the personal branding marketing business thing. And I was like, I was so honored that she accepted my invitation. But because before like few years before I include her in the, into the infographic, I asked her about her opinion on some stuff, the same personal project, I just put it into the infographic. Then I invited her on my podcast, and she was my kind of the, she opened the door for many other guests for me, because every time when I would reach for others, I would refer to that interview. And it would her episode, first one. And I will say like I interviewed these, these people interview her. And people will say, Oh, I know Dori, oh, she's amazing, because I know that many people knows her. And this is this is one of the key when you pick people who you will want to work with the influencers. Because this is the actual shortcut, you need to reach the people. You bring them in. And then when you reach out to someone, more likely they will know the person. So I tried to start reaching out to those who know her. And then once I get to different communities, I would just invite someone else from that community. Like, from I interviewed Dory, that I was, I'm in the marketing community, I went to the Social Media Marketing World. And they didn't remember who was the first person who I invited from there. But when someone from there were on my podcast, I could go through the list and there are many people from Social Media Marketing World Conference, who were in the pockets. I would just refer to another person, and then another card, but because of her name, I could invite someone else, get to that community and invite other people. So from your let's say, you're a dentist again, who can you if you have a podcast who could you invite? Or what celebrity can you work with that will that are known in the community and now that you You can, that kind of opened the door for you to meet or to work with someone else.

Right? I think that really even all of what you're saying in terms of that shortcut is borrowing the platform of someone else. Whether that's, and this is what really, for example, a veterinarian might do, they might go work for another veterinarian, who's already established. And essentially, when they branch out outside of that area, they're borrowing the platform. So we know this is in so many areas, or one of the CEOs that we wrote about in the book was, was a client of Steve Cutler, he went out and he was top level, but then he took a job at a, at a higher level, higher, well known brand, to build his reputation. So there's all kinds of different ways to do it. But if you want to grow that authority, borrowing it from someone else, when, when Steve and I wrote this book right here, this yellow and black one, lead with no fear, we borrowed the authority of Bob Berg, because he has a big huge brand, and he wrote a foreword for us. So this is extremely helpful and, and I'll be putting this in the show notes so people can take it through and, and so that you can just listen to this time. Marina, so great to have you on the show. Thank you for, for this, staying in communication over the years. I love watching what you do on LinkedIn, so many people, it's just one way communication. And you're actually in there connecting with people, not just posting and hope you people like it. But staying in there, which I think is a huge part of building influence is not just doing it for yourself, but really doing it for the relationships you build.

Thank you so much, Mike. It was my privilege to be on the show. And in the end of the day, it's all about people who work with people. It's about connecting and helping. Yes, we call boring the influence, but also, I like to call the collaboration. It's not about me, it's not about you. It's about us and people around us, those who we serve.
